Tips For Getting Your Home Ready For The Painters
There will come a time when you want to change the colors of the walls on the inside or outside of your home. If it is a small area you need painted, you may decide to do it yourself. However, unless you have done a lot of painting, you should probably hire professional painters to have the best results possible. Don't worry though, there is still plenty for you to do so you can feel involved in the project. Here are a few things you will need to take care of before the painters arrive to work.
Clear the Area
If the painting is being done inside, you need to move any furniture out of the area. While painters will use drop cloths to cover everything, having furniture in the way can make the job more difficult and longer. In addition, cloths can be moved accidentally, resulting in paint on things. When the job is the outside of the house, move everything that is movable.
Clean the Walls
Do not think that you can go without cleaning the walls because they are going to be painted. Dirt, dust, and grease will not only prohibit the paint from sticking properly, it can often be seen when the new paints dries. Even fine particles can leave a bit of texture in the finish. To ensure a nice, even coat that will not peel, get a clean mop and wash everything with hot water. If it is in the kitchen, where there is likely to be grease, use a cleaning solution or vinegar to break it down and get it off the walls.
Patch Nail Holes
Once you take everything off the walls, including pictures, shelves, or other decorations, remove all the nails and/or screws. You also need to fill in the holes with spackle and sand the areas smooth once the compound dries. You may feel this is not necessary as you will be hanging everything back up, but if you do decide to move things around, you want to be sure that no holes remain.
Painters are hired to do the painting. If you do not take the time to get the area ready for them, you will be paying them to stand around while you do, or you will end up with a less than perfect finish. If you are not sure what needs to be done to have everything go well, contact the professionals and ask them to come and walk through the area with you.
