Remodeling A Family Bathroom? Add More Of These 5 Things

A family bathroom must be a functional, sharable, practical space for everyone — including family members, overnight guests, and visitors. As you plan the renovation of your own family bathroom, the best way to accomplish all these jobs is to include more of a few key things. What more should you add? Here are five of the most important things.

1. More Storage. Most parents can attest to the fact that there's almost no such thing as too much storage in a family bathroom. Wall-based storage, under-sink storage, and built-in cabinets all provide more space for practical necessities and bulk storage. They also allow users to have dedicated storage space of their own.

2. More Mirrors. Family and guests will thank you for including more than just a single mirror over the sink. Install a longer, fuller mirror over the entire vanity when possible as well as additional large mirrors for full-body views. As with extra counterspace and sinks, extra mirrors let everyone prep for their day and double-check their looks at the same time.

3. More Vanity. If you have the choice between a single vanity and a double, you do well to opt for the double. Being able to duplicate all the activity that goes on around the sink and have additional work space will make sharing much easier. However, some homeowners forgo the additional sink and instead simply add more counterspace. Depending on how family members use the vanity, this could be a wise use of space.

4. More Sturdiness. Family bathrooms suffer the most wear and tear of all household bathrooms, so don't skimp on sturdy, quality materials. Choose paint, countertops, and flooring that will hold up against moisture, scuffs, horseplay, chipping, and fading.

5. More Zones. Have a large bathroom to work with? Separate the different activities as much as possible to reduce conflict when sharing. Move the shower away from the vanity, for instance, to allow multiple users to do different things at the same time. You might even consider a toilet room with a separate door. And that extra mirror? Install it so that someone can use it while someone else works at the vanity.
